Content Network to gain targeted traffic

A little background

The Google content network is the simplest way to place your ads at the core of the web - the millions of high-quality news pages, topic-specific websites, and blogs that your customers visit on a daily basis. If you’re not familiar with the network, you can read all about it in What is the Google Network?

We would like to address a few common concerns from advertisers.

“I’d like to know where my ads are showing on the content network and how they perform on various sites”

Done. We recently released Placement Performance reports, which provide site-by-site performance metrics for your contextually-targeted campaigns — tracking clicks, impressions, cost, and conversion data at the URL level. Placement Performance reports can show you where you’re meeting your objectives, and where you aren’t.

“Can I get the same ROI from content sites?”

Yes, we provide several options for you to manage your ROI across search and content. Using content bids, you can set one price for search clicks and a different price for clicks from the content network. You decide the value each network brings to your business. You can also create separate content campaigns that allow you to manage and optimize content separately from search. In addition, we’ve created smart pricing, which analyses network data and actually reduces the price you pay for a content click that is less likely to turn into a sale. No effort needed on your part — smart pricing is automatic.

Several advertisers have used the content network successfully to achieve great ROI on content.

“I like content, but I don’t want my ad to show on certain sites.”

To enable this, we’ve created the site exclusion tool, which you can use to specify sites where your ad will not appear.

“I only want my ad to appear on sites I hand-pick.”

No problem. An AdWords placement-targeted campaign lets you select the exact content network sites where your campaign will appear. We recently released cost-per-click bidding for placement targeting. You can now hand-pick the parts of the content network where you’d like your ads to appear and choose the bidding option (CPM or CPC) that fits your needs. Learn more about placement targeting.

Re-enabling the content network for your AdWords campaigns is easy. Here’s how:

  • Log in to your account at https://adwords.google.co.uk
  • Select the box next to the keyword-targeted campaign you wish to edit.
  • Click ‘Edit Campaign Settings.’
  • Locate ‘Where to show my ads.’ Select ‘Content network’ (or both search and content).
  • Click ‘Save all changes.’

That’s all there is to it — the AdWords system will do the rest.

As always, we’ll be happy to assist you in any way we can. Feel free to contact us at adwords-support@google.com or check out our optimisation tips for additional assistance. We look forward to providing you with the most effective advertising available.

Sincerely,

The Google AdWords Team
